March 24, 2022

Blue Note Records has announced the next run of titles in the Classic Vinyl Reissue Series, which presents affordable 180g all-analog vinyl reissues in standard packaging that are mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and manufactured at Optimal. Curated by Don Was and Cem Kurosman, the series continues its exploration of the extensive Blue Note catalog with titles that span the many eras and styles of the legendary label’s eight-decade history presented by themes: Bebop, Hard Bop, Soul Jazz, Post-Bop, Avant-Garde, The 70s, The Rebirth, and Hidden Gems.

The newly announced titles begin on May 20 with two 1970s classics revered as the source of prominent samples on seminal hip hop tracks by A Tribe Called Quest: Two Headed Freap, the 1972 debut by organist Ronnie Foster whose track Mystic Brew was sampled on Electric Relaxation, and Moon Rappin’, a 1969 album by organist Brother Jack McDuff that was released in 1970 and later sampled on Scenario and Check the Rhime. Both titles are available for pre-order now on the Blue Note Store.

Other highlights of the new line-up include some of the most beloved classics of the Blue Note catalog like Thelonious Monk Genius of Modern Music, Vol. 1, Lou Donaldson Blues Walk, Larry Young Unity, Wayne Shorter Adam’s Apple, and Andrew Hill Point of Departure, as well as lesser-known treasures like Don Wilkerson Preach Brother!, George Braith Extension, and Grachan Moncur III Evolution. Two modern era standouts - Charlie Hunter Bing, Bing, Bing! and Joe Lovano I’m All For You - are analog recordings that will get their first-ever vinyl release mastered AAA by Gray direct from the master tapes.

Blue Note has announced the continuation of the Classic Vinyl Reissue Series, which presents affordable 180g vinyl reissues in standard packaging that are mastered by Kevin Gray and manufactured at Optimal. The pressings are all-analog whenever an analog source is available, with Gray mastering directly from the original master tapes. While the first 16 titles of the series focused on the best-known Blue Note classics from the 1950s and 60s, the new run of titles curated by Don Was and Cem Kurosman broadens its scope to span the many eras and styles of the legendary label's eight-decade history presented by themes: Bebop, Hard Bop, Soul Jazz, Post-Bop, Avant-Garde, The 70s, The Rebirth, and Hidden Gems.

From vibraphonist Milt Jackson's late-1940s bebop sides with pianist Thelonious Monk to vocalist Cassandra Wilson's expansive 1993 jazz/folk/blues masterpiece Blue Light ‘Til Dawn, the Classic Series fully represents Blue Note's motto: The Finest In Jazz Since 1939. Upcoming highlights of the series include: a first-ever vinyl release of pianist Geri Allen's excellent 1994 trio album Twenty One with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams; a first-time vinyl reissue of Detroit piano legend Kenny Cox's 1968 debut Introducing Kenny Cox and The Contemporary Jazz Quintet; and under-recognized pianist and composer Herbie Nichols' two 10" LPs The Prophetic Herbie Nichols, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 recorded in 1955 will be reissued on a single 12" LP.

On November 19, two timeless hard bop treasures produced by label founder Alfred Lion - 6 Pieces of Silver by the Horace Silver Quintet and The Big Beat by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - will be paired with two classic 1975 productions by Larry Mizell - Places and Spaces by trumpeter Donald Byrd and a first-time vinyl reissue of Fancy Dancer by flutist Bobbi Humphrey. October 1 will see the first-time vinyl reissue of pianist Duke Pearson's too-little-known holiday gem Merry Ole Soul, recorded in 1969 with Bob Cranshaw on bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and percussionist Airto Moreira. Explore the Classic Vinyl Reissue Series on the Blue Note Store.

"The sound on the first four releases in the Classic Vinyl Reissue Series is remarkably clear, allowing for top-notch dynamics," wrote Bill Milkowski in The Absolute Sound. "The low end is outstanding, producing a warm, woody presence from the upright bass and a resounding depth in the low register of the piano, while the high notes issuing forth from trumpets and saxes are swathed in a very natural blanket of sound. Regarding the drum kit, the nuance of brushwork on the snare registers with clarity and adds an alluring quality to the mix. And the ride cymbal, the veritable heartbeat of these swinging jazz classics, rings out with authority… Overall, the sound is gorgeous on this Classic Vinyl Reissue Series."

Classic Vinyl Reissue Series - Release Schedule:

February 2, 2021

Blue Note Records has announced the upcoming 2021-2022 line-up for the acclaimed Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series, which will kick off March 12 with Charles Lloyd & The Marvels' new album Tone Poem, the first-ever new release to be included in the series. Fittingly, it was Lloyd who first dubbed Harley the 'Tone Poet'.

Other highlights include a first-ever vinyl release of pianist Andrew Hill's brilliant 1969 album Passing Ships, which was rediscovered in the vaults by producer Michael Cuscuna and first released in 2003, and will come out May 7 paired with tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon's expansive 1964 album One Flight Up. Katanga!, a rare gem from the Pacific Jazz catalog by saxophonist Curtis Amy and trumpeter Dupree Bolton, comes out on June 4 along with a first-time digital release of the album. The Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of Katanga! will include a new essay by Thomas Conrad that elucidates the story behind the album.

The Tone Poet series is produced by Joe Harley and features all-analog, 180g audiophile vinyl reissues that are mastered from the original master tapes by Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio. Tone Poet vinyl is manufactured at RTI in Camarillo, California, and packaged in deluxe Stoughton Printing 'Old Style' Gatefold Tip-On Jackets.

'For jazz fans, a new batch of releases in Blue Note's Tone Poet series - vinyl reissues remastered with care and cut from the original analog tapes - is reason for celebration' wrote Stereophile editor Jim Austin in their January 2021 issue. January 23, 2019

In honor of Blue Note Records' 80th Anniversary, the legendary Jazz label is launching the Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series. Blue Note President Don Was brought in "Tone Poet" Joe Harley - co-founder and co-producer of the acclaimed Music Matters audiophile vinyl series - to produce this new series of all-analog, mastered-from-the-original-master-tape 180g audiophile vinyl reissues in deluxe gatefold packaging. Mastering is by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) and vinyl is being manufactured at Record Technology Incorporated (RTI).

The titles were handpicked by Harley and cover lesser-known Blue Note classics, modern era standouts, and albums from other labels under the Blue Note catalog. The first two albums in the series - Wayne Shorter Etcetera and Chick Corea Now He Sings, Now He Sobs - are out February 8. See below for a full list of 2019 releases for the Tone Poet Series.

Read Harley's essay Blue Note, Tone Poetry and Audiophilia about his history with Blue Note, Music Matters, and his "quest to capture the sound of those master tapes on vinyl and to allow listeners to know what it would sound like to actually be in Rudy [Van Gelder]'s living room in Hackensack or later in Rudy's studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ."
